Disaster Services

Focuses on meeting people’s immediate emergency disaster-caused needs.  When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food and clothing to address basic human needs.  In addition to these services, the core of Red Cross disaster relief is the assistance given to individuals and families affected by disaster to enable them to resume the normal daily activities independently.

One-to-One Mentoring

A preventative program that works closely with parents to match every child with the right adult mentor, called a Big Brother or Big Sister.  Each potential mentor is screened, trained, matched, and supervised by program staff to ensure that the relationship will be safe and rewarding for everyone involved.  The mentor introduces the child to new experiences and opportunities, assists with academic performance, and demonstrates positive behaviors and attitudes.  Our goal is to promote children to become responsible, well-adjusted, productive adults as a result of a positive mentoring relationship.

Boy Scout Program

Boy Scouts endeavors to develop American citizens who are physically, mentally and emotionally fit; have a high degree of self-reliance as evidence in such qualities as initiative, courage, and resourcefulness; have personal values based on religious concepts; have the desire and skills to help others; understand the principles of the American social, economic, and governmental systems; are knowledgeable about and take pride in their American heritage and understand our nation’s role in the world; have a keen respect for the basic rights of all people; and are prepared to participate in and give leadership to American society.  This is accomplished through a year-round outdoor-centered program uniquely designed to meet the developmental needs of young men.

Cub Scout Program

Cub Scouting is a year-round family-oriented program designed to meet the developmental needs of young boys and their families through fun and challenging activities that promote life skills, positive family relationships, cooperative skills while working with adults and peers, citizenship, character development, spiritual growth, physical fitness and a willingness to do his best.  Family involvement is an essential part of Cub Scouting program and parents are encouraged to play an active role.

Learning For Life

The Learning For Life program provides programs that are designed to support schools and other youth-serving organizations in their efforts toward preparing youth to successfully handle the complexities of today’s society and to enhance their self-confidence, motivation, and self-worth.  Learning for Life also helps youth develop social and life skills, assists in character development, and helps them formulate positive personal values.   The program offers a Character Education program for elementary, middle and high schools, as well as the Exploring program.

Venture Scout Program

Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age.  Venturing’s purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.  Venturing is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth, adult leaders, and organizations in their communities.  The result is a program of exciting and meaningful activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow, develop leadership skills, and become good citizens.

An education enhancement program for youth that features five major components:

  • Homework help and tutoring
  • High-yield learning and leisure activities
  • Parent and adult involvement
  • Collaboration with schools
  • Incentives

Education & Career Development is one of the five core program areas that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coastal Carolina emphasizes in its daily program.  Project Learn is a program strategy that allows the Boys & Girls Club to effectively measure program outcomes and accomplish our mission in youth development.

Extended Case Management

Provides sheltered residents with a continuation of services upon exit from the shelter facility.  Through a process of extensive case management, clients are allowed access to all program services as they transition from the shelter into independent, non-violent living situations.  Included in the services made available through the extended case management program are:  individual counseling, support group, limited transportation assistance, food pantry, emergency medical assistance, mother’s and children’s programs, emergency financial assistance through the Women’s Independent Scholarship Program, and assistance with legal issues through the agencies legal advocacy program.  The purpose is to provide the client with continued support, advocacy, and assistance focusing on a reduction of violence in future relationships and for future generations, and to provide them with the tools to make better choices in future relationships.

Assists eligible senior adults with: 1) purchasing prescriptions and specific medical supplies, 2) education about pertinent health issues and 3) assistance to access other services such as Patient Assistance Programs and Medicare Part D that could help with costs of medical care products.

Family Self-Sufficency Transportation Program

Assists a (maximum) of 50 low-income families living within Carteret County and receiving HUD Section 8 Rental Assistance.  To participate in the program, the family must have a final goal to obtain and maintain stable employment that would enable them to support their families and become free of government assistance programs.  The transportation funding is used to enable these clients to continue with their educational, job training or employment goals.

LIFEguard

A life responsibility, character building, interactive educational curriculum whose purpose is to save youth from the sea of negative consequences of non-marital sexual activity through education of youth, parents, and adults in the community.  Our long term goal is to help teens/youth avoid the consequences of unhealthy decisions, such as having to come into the center for a pregnancy test or being tested for STDs.  As a result they would be more likely to continue their education and reach their life goals.

CIS After School – Down East

Provides volunteer tutors and mentors to work with students to improve their reading, writing and math skills.   This program brings an array of academic and enrichment opportunities to children who may not otherwise have a chance to participate in similar activities with other programs, since they are not readily accessible due to the great travel distance and lack of transportation.

Asthma is one of the most common illnesses among children and the leading reason for school absenteeism due to a chronic disease.  The breathing problems caused by asthma keeps many children from participating in normal childhood activities.  However, children with controlled asthma can do anything.  The Craven-Pamlico Asthma Coalition works with area pediatricians to ensure that families have all the knowledge and tools needed to let their child with asthma go to school every day, participate in sports, and feel healthy.  Our primary goals are Asthma self-management through proper medication; removal or reduction of environmental triggers; and education of the patient, family and community.

Family Law Access to Justice Project (FLAJP)

A program of Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc., (LANC) a non-profit law firm serving the civil legal needs of low-income and elderly persons.  LANC attorneys will hold community education forums which will focus on the dual aims of providing residents of Craven, Carteret, Pamlico and Jones Counties with 1) general legal information about child custody and divorce and 2) specific, user-friendly directions and legal forms to pursue family law remedies in District Court.  The community education forums will be open to the public-at-large without regard to income status or other general eligibility for LANC legal services.

Craven County Teen Court

Teen Court is an alternative to Juvenile Court that prevents juvenile delinquency. Youth volunteers complete training and take a “bar” exam, prior to being sworn in as officers of the court with an official presiding judge. First time offenders appear before Teen Court and then, complete sanctions imposed by a jury of peers to avoid a criminal record. The program gives first time offenders a second chance, promotes accountability and law abiding values, reduces the case load of the Juvenile Justice system, and teaches youth civic responsibility as well as respect for diversity.

Victim Services Program

Serves victims of child sexual abuse and child sexual abuse survivors, as well as other types of family violence.  Our agency provides crisis intervention, peer counseling, hospital and court advocacy, emergency needs assessment and provisions, information and referrals for counseling by certified, licensed therapists who specialize in working with victims of family violence.

Homeless Shelter Rehabilitation Program

Provides food, clothing, transportation, medications, necessary referrals and financial assistance to homeless families and individuals.  RCS offers the only comprehensive program for homelessness in the Coastal Carolina community.

Transportation Assistance

Provides appropriate financial assistance to meet critical travel needs.  Local needs are met with the issuance of a CARTS (Craven Area Rural Transit System) voucher or a gasoline voucher for work or necessary appointments.  Long-distance travel needs due to family crisis, or for those individuals who are leaving this area permanently, are met with the purchase of a bus ticket.

Scholarship Program

Our Scholarships are designed to allow families or persons who want to be a part of the YMCA but who cannot afford a membership or program fee the opportunity to join and participate in our programs.  Scholarships are offered for membership and for programs such as After School Child Care, Summer Day Camp, Gymnastics, Swimming, etc.
